Book Review: Blaze

Blaze was written by Stephen King (Richard Bachman) and published by Scribner in 2007 (Re-print edition). You can purchase it on Amazon/Kindle and you can visit the author on Amazon and on social media.

A gripping crime novel with an injection of humanity within that will have you empathizing with this monster size of a man called Blaze.

He was beaten by his father as a child. It left him with a very low IQ, a large, cavernous dent in his forehead and an inability to normally socialize with others. Clayton Blaisdell Jr., known as Blaze, struggled in life to fit in and he got involved in petty crimes, but he would soon meet up with George Rackley, a seasoned pro in the con game. George took Blaze under his wing and taught him the ropes, but he also used Blaze's low intellect as a tool to do his dirty work, since the one thing Blaze did to fit in was to follow directions and to ask no questions. George came up with an idea that would net them a lot of money; Millions of dollars if they were successful. The scheme was to kidnap a baby of a wealthy family. As the plan was being finalized something happened that would change everything, or at least erase the brains of the operation: George is killed but to Blaze, George is very much alive, and he is still able to direct Blaze in how to carry out the kidnapping. Blaze decides, that in order for him to survive, he must continue with the plan to kidnap an infant baby known as Joe, born to a wealthy family, living on a very large estate. In a mostly haphazard way, the abduction is carried out. but now Blaze is faced with something he didn't plan for: The responsibility of caring for and providing for a little baby that Blaze eventually becomes attached to. Stephen King, writing as Richard Bachman, wrote this more than forty years ago. It is a very gripping crime novel with an injection of humanity within that will have you empathizing with this monster size of a man called Blaze. His exploits into various criminal activities will make you cringe, but you will grow to love him as another one of King's amazing and memorable characters. This is one you won't forget. Blaze is a must read!

I give Blaze 5 out of 5 stars.
