Book Review: Central Park West: A Crime Novel

Writer: Thomas RiddellThomas Riddell

Central Park West: A Crime Novel was written by James Comey and published by Mysterious Press in 2023. You can purchase it on Amazon/Kindle and you can visit the author on Amazon.

In this true to life fictional story deals are made that would make many law-abiding citizens cringe but it is the way that it is done.

When a years-long case against a powerful mobster finally cracks and an unimpeachable witness takes the stand, federal prosecutor Nora Carleton is looking forward to putting the defendant away for good. The mobster, though, has other plans. As the witness’s testimony concludes, a note is passed to the prosecution offering up information into the assassination of a disgraced former New York governor, murdered in his penthouse apartment just days before. It’s enough to blow the case wide open, and to send Nora into a high-stakes investigation of conspiracy, corruption, and danger. Given the author's long career and background in the criminal justice field, I was intrigued to dive into this crime case and to see if Comey could take the leap from non-fiction to fiction; and to reveal a little more of what goes on behind the scenes of a criminal investigation and how it all plays out in court. I was not disappointed. The characters were interesting, and the plot had enough drama and excitement to hold me to the page and there was a twist at the end that pushed it a little higher up on my rating scale. I think the inner workings of our justice system isn't quite understood or appreciated by the average American who is watching it from the outside. Comey's Crime Novel reveals both the good and the not so good components of how justice is approached in America. Do the good guys always win? No, they don't. In this true to life fictional story deals are made that would make many law-abiding citizens cringe but it is the way that it is done. It can be messy and deadly, and it can haunt many people like Comey for the rest of their lives. I hope Mr. Comey continues his new career as both a non-fiction and fictional writer. He is very good at it. I loved Central Park West: A Crime Novel.

I give Central Park West 4 out of 5 stars.
