Book Review: Fairy Tale

Fairy Tale was written by Stephen King and published by Scibner in 2022. You can purchase it on Amazon/Kindle and you can visit the author on Amazon and on social media.

This one is a lengthy read, but with Stephen King at the wheel, you'll enjoy every mile of the long ride. I loved it! Charlie Reade is a typical seventeen-year-old high school student. He plays baseball and football and pulls in some decent grades, but he has a lot going on at home. His mom was killed on a local bridge by a hit and run driver when he was seven and his dad dealt with his grief by becoming a raging alcoholic. Charlie managed to take care of himself as well as his dad, but it wasn't easy. When he was seventeen, he met a dog named Radar from the neighborhood and her owner, Howard Bowditch. Howard is a recluse who lives in a big house at the top of a big hill and there's a locked shed behind the house that has strange noises coming from it. Howard has an accident while working on his house and it's then when Charlie starts working for Mr. Bowditch. Charlie falls in love with Radar and continues his visits to help Mr. Bowditch around the house. Then tragedy strikes. Mr. Bowditch dies, and things start to get strange. Howard leaves Charlie a recording on a cassette tape. It's a fantastical story about a portal to another world and it's all there inside of the shed. It's a tale that Mr. Bowditch has kept secret all of his life and now Charlie is the only one that knows of it. What will Charlie do? King is a master storyteller and I have read and reviewed many of his books down through the years. I should note that this tale dives into the realm of fantasy and while I prefer more of King's horror weighted stories, this is one that will appeal more to readers who enjoy the fantasy genre. For me, the first half of the book was classic King. His characters are interesting and the story leading up to the portal in the shed is engaging, plausible and mysterious. This one is a lengthy read, but with Stephen King at the wheel, you'll enjoy every mile of the long ride. I loved it!

I give Fairy Tale 4 out of 5 stars.
