Book Review: The Immortal Irishman

The Immortal Irishman was written by Timothy Egan and published by Mariner Books in 2016. You can purchase it on Amazon/Kindle and you can visit the author on Amazon and on social media.

The Immortal Irishman is not a work of fiction, it is a historical account of a great man's life that reads like a novel. It's a must read!

Thomas Francis Meagher was a great American patriot who fought for the Union as a general in the Civil War, but before all of that, he was a Fugative from justice after fleeing a penal colony in Australia. He was in prison there for speaking out against British rule during the Great Hunger in the 1840s. This was a man with wit, charm, and humor who had the power of being a very effective orator. He led the Irish Brigade during the Civil War, fighting as an example of how he and his fierce and determined Irishmen would stand up to wrongs done to a country. After the war was over, he moved west and was the acting governor of Montana and endeavoured to build a New Ireland in the western regions of that state. He lived an amazing life, but his disappearance, at the end of his adventures, opened up a mystery that has stood for years, and it's one that the author expertly writes about in this book.

The Immortal Irishman is not a work of fiction, it is a historical account of a great man's life that reads like a novel. It is one of those stories that will keep you up at night, well into the wee hours of the morning, especially if you are a lover of history. There are so many wonderful men and women who colored our past, whom don't get the recognition they deserve, mostly because we have never heard of them before. We should honor and bring to light Thomas Meagher, especially during these times, as he is one of those people who deserves recognition for all he stood for. Tim Egan is an exceptional storyteller, and he easily has become a favorite author of mine, who will always find a place on my bookshelf.

This is definitively a must read!

I give The Immortal Irishman a 5 out of 5 stars.
