Book Review: The Legend of Lilia

Applause for this moving and exciting tale of war and the undying spirit and determination of WWII female fighter pilots.

In the early 1930's a teenage Russian girl was mesmerized by watching airplanes flying overhead. She knew she wanted to someday be a pilot. In 1936, at the young age of fifteen, her wish came true. Lilia Litvyak made her first solo flight in a wood and canvas biplane. This was just the beginning for her. After her beloved father was wrongfully executed by the Soviets for being a traitor, she sought to clear her father's name and to restore honor to her family by fighting the Germans in World War II. She took to the skies above Stalingrad and began to shoot down the enemy, one plane after another. A woman becoming a pilot was frowned upon by her male counterparts but that didn't stop Lilia. She would continue her fierce battles with the enemy and soon she earned the designation of "Ace" and the nickname of "White Lily of Stalingrad". Despite her efforts, her nation held back the highest honor of being "Hero of the Soviet Union". That would require a lot more effort and so her legendary status would have to wait until after the facts were compiled and her story was told.

This book is based on a true story. I applaud the author for this moving and exciting tale of war and the undying spirit and determination of WWII female fighter pilots. He took me right into Lilia's cockpit of battle and I held on tight to the story until landing on the final page. I respect and admire the research that Christopher Redwine put forth in order to complete this work. Too many great people and their amazing and heroic stories have been lost to history and this is a story to absorb and to reflect upon. Lilia Litvyak's place in history should never be overlooked, especially at this point in time. This was written extremely well and after starting, I found it hard to put down.

The Legend of Lilia is a must read!

I give The Legend of Lilia 5 out of 5 stars.
