Book Review: Handcuffs, Truncheon And A Polyester Thong

Handcuffs, Truncheon and a Polyester Thong: The adventures of Constable Mavis Upton was written by Gina Kirkham in 2017.

You may purchase it at Amazon.com/Kindle. Visit the author on Twitter and on Facebook.

Meet Mavis Upton. As mummy to 7-year old Ella, surrogate to far too many pets and with a failed marriage under her belt, Mavis knows she needs to make some life-changing decisions. It's time to strike out into the world, to stand on her own two feet … to pursue a lifelong ambition to become a Police Officer. I mean, what could go wrong? Supported by her quirky, malapropism-suffering mum, Mavis throws herself headlong into a world of uncertainty, self-discovery, fearless escapades, laughter and extra-large knickers. And using her newly discovered investigative skills, she reluctantly embarks on a search to find her errant dad who was last seen years before, making off with her mum's much needed coupon for a fabulous foam cup bra all the way from America.

It's important that we laugh at and enjoy this roller coaster ride that we call life. Surely, it has its ups and downs and sometimes we need to embrace the eccentric people who cross our paths, even when our first instincts are to wave them off. Mavis Upton is one of those characters who will literally have you in stitches of hilarity and if not careful, you’ll be spitting out your coffee at what she does and says. Filled with farts, boogers, big nellies and on the job cop pranks, it’s a behind the scenes look at how the people who protect us cope with the stressors of the job. Mavis lives her dream of becoming a police officer but she is also undeniably attached to her love for her young daughter and aging mother. Laughter will partner with heartache and loss but this is exactly what will endear you to Mavis Upton and her adventures in life.

Gina Kirkham tells a tale that was seeded by her real-life experiences as a police officer. She is now retired from wearing the badge and has embarked on her next adventure of being a writer and an author. Her writing style, aside from the humor that she expertly delivers, has an attraction that will only bloom as she continues her writing career. I expect that we’ll see a lot more from Gina Kirkham.

I give Handcuffs, Truncheon and a Polyester Thong: The adventures of Constable Mavis Upton 4 out of 5 stars.
